Great Security Advice

When you move into a new home, you want to put a good amount of thought into making that home as burglar-proof as possible. This means making changes to the house and to the behaviors of those in your household. This article will walk you through some of the changes you may want to make in order to better-secure your home.

Stage a burglary

The first thing you should do is to take the proper steps to recognizing weak areas in your home that put you at a greater risk of being victimized. A good way to do this is to stage a mock burglary. Lock the house up tightly and go around all exterior areas trying to break in. Take care of any weak areas as soon as possible, so you know they are now secure.

Strengthen the most common break-in areas

The most common areas for a criminal to break in to a house are the front door, the back door and the garage door. For this reason, the front door and back door to your house should be made of solid material and they should have deadbolts installed with three-inch screws.

A garage door that has an automatic opener should have the emergency lever secured with a zip tie. The emergency lever allows you to pull it and have the door open quickly in case of an emergence. However, someone can use a wire through the top of the door from the outside, to loop in the hole in this lever and pop the door. Tie a zip tie through the hole and to the track on top of the lever to prevent this from being possible.

Secure sliding glass doors

Sliding glass doors generally lock with the use of a latch. The latch mechanism tends to make the door easy to get into because they are vulnerable to being pushed open with a little bit of force. For this reason, it's important for you to put secondary locks on the sliding glass doors in your home.

Keep your schedule a secret

Do what you can to keep your daily schedule as hard for people to figure out as possible. A few ways you can do this include parking your car inside of your garage, putting your lights on timers so they come on and make it look like someone is home, putting a hold on your mail when you won't be home for more than a few days and closing your blinds when you leave the house.

Have your safe maintained

When you put your stuff in the safe, you want to know it is being well-protected. The best way for you to know this is to have a professional conduct your safe maintenance. Also, make sure your safe is secured in a location that makes it as difficult as possible for someone to get at. You may want to hide it, or put obstacles in their way. If you have a security system, have one of the motion detectors cover the area in front of it.
